AI Policy
1. General Statement
Jurnal Ekonomika: Manajemen, Akuntansi dan Perbankan Syariah recognizes that Artificial Intelligence (AI), including generative AI, can support research and scholarly writing. However, its use must be responsible, transparent, and consistent with the principles of academic integrity.
This policy applies to authors, editors, and reviewers involved in the journal's publication process. The use of AI does not replace human responsibility for the accuracy, originality, validity, and integrity of scholarly work.
2. Policy for Authors
2.1 Use of AI in Manuscript Preparation
Authors may use AI tools to assist with grammar improvement, readability, translation, idea organization, and other supporting writing tasks. Such use must remain under the authors' supervision and control.
Authors must check, verify, and edit AI-generated outputs before incorporating them into their manuscripts. Authors remain fully responsible for all manuscript content, including text, data, analysis, tables, figures, and references.
AI must not be used to fabricate or manipulate research data, produce false findings, create fictitious references, or present unverified information as established scientific fact.
2.2 Disclosure of AI Use
Substantive use of generative AI in manuscript preparation must be disclosed transparently. The declaration should be placed at the end of the manuscript, before the references, and should identify the AI tool and the purpose for which it was used.
Routine spelling, grammar, and punctuation checks do not require disclosure unless otherwise required by the journal's policy.
Example of an AI use declaration:
“During the preparation of this article, the author(s) used [name of AI tool] to assist with [purpose of use]. The author(s) reviewed and edited the generated output and take full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and final content of the article.”
If AI is used as part of the research methodology, such as data processing or analysis, its use must be adequately described in the Methods section so that the process can be evaluated and, where relevant, replicated.
2.3 Authorship
AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors. Authorship is reserved for human contributors who meet the journal's authorship criteria and are willing to take responsibility for the published work.
2.4 Use of AI for Images, Tables, and Data
Authors must disclose substantive use of AI in generating or modifying images, illustrations, tables, or other materials presented as part of the research. Such use must not mislead readers or alter the meaning of scientific evidence.
AI must not be used to fabricate, improperly alter, or manipulate research data or evidence. Where AI is part of the research methodology, its use must be transparently described in the manuscript.
3. Policy for Reviewers
Reviewers must maintain the confidentiality of all manuscripts received for evaluation. Reviewers must not upload unpublished manuscripts, portions of manuscripts, data, figures, or supplementary documents to external AI tools when doing so could compromise confidentiality or authors' rights.
Reviewers must not delegate scholarly evaluation or the substantive preparation of review reports entirely to AI. Reviews must be based on the reviewer's expertise, critical judgment, and independent assessment.
Reviewers remain responsible for the objectivity, accuracy, and integrity of their review reports. AI may be used to improve the language of comments written by the reviewer only when manuscript confidentiality is preserved and the use does not conflict with the journal's requirements.
4. Policy for Editors
Editors are responsible for protecting manuscript confidentiality and maintaining editorial independence. Editors must not upload unpublished manuscripts, reviewer reports, or confidential editorial communications to external AI tools when doing so could compromise the confidentiality of that information.
AI must not replace an editor's professional judgment when assessing manuscripts, selecting reviewers, or making acceptance and rejection decisions. All editorial decisions must be made by humans based on scholarly quality, peer review findings, and journal policies.
The use of technological tools for administrative or technical screening must remain subject to human oversight.
5. Violations of the AI Policy
If there is a concern regarding undisclosed, irresponsible, or otherwise improper AI use, the editor may request clarification and supporting information from the authors.
Depending on the findings and severity of the violation, the journal may request revisions, reject a manuscript, publish a correction to an existing article, or retract an article when applicable criteria are met. Alleged violations will be handled objectively, proportionately, and in accordance with the journal's publication ethics policy.
6. Policy Review
This policy may be reviewed and updated periodically to reflect developments in AI technology, scholarly publishing practices, and publication ethics standards. All parties involved in the publication process are expected to comply with this policy to maintain the integrity and trustworthiness of scholarly publications.
